Klaus Hübner rides 25,000 kilometers by motorcycle through Russia, across Mongolia and back through Central Asia. On the return journey, the Pamir Highway takes him to over 4,600 meters along the Afghan border and through Turkmenistan into Iran – and finally back to Europe.
One man, one motorcycle and thousands of kilometers of adventure: The journey leads through Russia, via Ukraine into Mongolia, on to the Pamir mountains and as far as Turkmenistan. It is a route full of contrasts – from abandoned cities and rugged mountain passes to endless steppes, national parks and historic Silk Road towns.
Klaus Hübner has a special connection to Mongolia that has grown over many years. Time and time again, the motorcycle takes him back to this wide and open land – always on new and surprising routes. His images, experiences and stories reveal why this region is so unique.
Along the way, he visits remarkable places: former nuclear test bases, forgotten Gulag museums, Chernobyl, and the shamanic island of Olkhon on Lake Baikal. Then come the steep passes of the Pamir – over 4,600 meters above sea level – and the return journey along ancient caravan routes through Central Asia. Names such as Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva sound like promises.
What remains are impressive landscapes, encounters, improvisation – and the realization that even difficult situations can be mastered. The talk takes the audience on a journey far beyond maps.
